A new world awaits! Step into the virtual reality of World at War, and experience a revolution like none other. Explore a vast open world and shape it how you wish. From a soldier on the front lines, to a master strategist at the rear, to a crafter making ammunition to feed the insatiable hunger of battle, all will have a part to play. Band together with other players to conquer regions and create virtual empires of your own. But beware others may have the same designs as you, and they may not be eager to share...

World at War is the most ambitious virtual world game in history. Virtual reality games have existed for years, but this will be the first with a true virtual world. Financial commentators have called it an insane risk. Scientists have hailed it as the beginning of a new technological revolution. To gamers, it was one thing amazing. For three long years, they have waited with anticipation for its release, and now the new world is upon them. But a new frontier comes with many unknowns, and players will need to learn how to survive in the game's harsh virtual world. And what influence is the game having on their real world selves?

Zach Wofford was a beta player, and knows first-hand what an amazing experience World at War will be. Together, with just a small band of his friends, he will make something great in the virtual world, or go down fighting in the attempt. But he knows that just a few players will never do; they will need a bigger group to survive the myriad of enemies hoping to pick their bones. A lone wolf will be overwhelmed by sheer numbers, but a pack, that's something to be feared.

Join the members of Black Wolf Company as they experience the early days of World at War. Battles will be fought, friendships will be formed, trust will be broken. Their lives in two worlds will be changed forever. But through all this, one question will still remain.

In a World at War...

What's your battle?

I actually read this book about a while ago but completely dropped the ball on writing a review. I think this series has a lot of potential. The story feels a little clunky at times and the philosophical dialogue between the characters offline in the real world feel really contrived. The conversations repeat the same nonsense over and over that I started skipping those sections completely and so far I haven't read a single instance that I missed any plot points by doing so. Basically, unless those conversations are intrinsic to the story, take them out. They feel like after-thoughts and serve only as speed bumps along the story.

Although the offline dialogue was annoying, the main plotline within the game was well done and I enjoyed it immensely. I'm getting back into the series now that I finally sprung for KU and have already started book 2 in this series. I'm very interested to see where Mitchell takes this by the 9th book!

Black Wolf A World at War Novel World at War Online Book 1 eBook Mitchell T Jacobs Reviews

I read a lot of virtual reality type books, all of which are set in a fantasy world, which made me hesitant to buy this book. I can say that I am very satisfied that i took the chance and bought it. The characters are well done and the book discuss' the implications of virtual reality which I found interesting to read about.

One of the little things that annoyed me was that it never told you what level the main characters are, and it doesn't give you a baseline of what is high level...is it level 20, 30, or even higher? Some people are referred to as low level, but I don't know if that meant they were level 1 or level 15 which was slightly annoying to me.

(SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD)

Another thing that bugged me was that Zach didn't really DO anything after their first raid. Sure, he becomes a commander (which doesn't give him any XP so there is no incentive for people to want to do it if someone wants to level) and he helps coordinate things, but other than that he doesn't do anything spectacular. Zach just seems to pale in comparison to the other people in his company and I personally do not find that very endearing for a main protagonist.

Overall it is a pretty good book and I would recommend it to people that are a fan of this genre.
As a long-time MMO gamer I thought this sounded interesting, so I picked it up. I have since put it down because of the myriad of typos, double words, etc. I got to the point in the book where the Ragnarok team was attacking the stronghold that was holding a meeting of teams not yet taken over. "The they, what whatever" just became too much to wade through and try to figure out. Still not sure the pace of the book moves well, but having to stop every couple of lines or paragraphs and figure out which word was meant kept slowing me down. PLEASE EDIT this book.
Not bad at all. Although I fail to see the adventure aspect of constant war, this is a good addition to the genre. lots of action if nothing else, and some food for thought here and there in the form of the usual reflections on the implications of a VR. All in all an OK read, if not as engrossing as some. I suspect the constant war will get tiresome after a while though and as most game-play mechanisms are hidden, for good or for bad, it also takes away the fun factor for me.
Zach and Danny are playing a new video game...a game that that they have participated in developing. It's one day before the game is to launched...'World at War', set in a post-apocalyptic Chicago. It's a video game taken to the max, with neuro-helmets, and the hint of real-world consequences--and mystery, like why the name Black Wolf is already filled out on a form. Can the players meet in the 'real world'...gradually they get to know a little about their real world selves. They finally meet the man who has been paying them to develope the game, Anton Starvos, who is going to pay them handsomely for a 'sociological study' of them. Some start to question the idea. Philosophical and ethical considerations are brought into the mix. Can relationships developed in the virtual world continue in the real world? Are there things that are learned in the virtual world that can apply to reality? The author is tech-savvy, and has produced a fast-paced action packed thriller of a book--a real page turner! Well written and very well thought out! Review by author PanOrpheus (Howard Lipman)
I'm rereading this series because I stopped on the fourth or fifth book last time and I wanted to give it another chance. I love the action and I like how the author is able to couch philosophy and sociology within the book without it detracting from the story and the action. I also really enjoy the game world that's being set up. The one thing I don't like is the endless parade of forgettable characters and companies. It's really difficult to figure out who belongs where and why they're important. I'm hoping it gets better.
I have to admit I was drawn into this book thinking that it was a fantasy mmo and I am just addicted to the stuff but when I got to reading it I found out that it was a military game rather than fantasy so I told myself that I was gonna stop reading it...... Right after this page, or this, or maybe the next one, and eventually it really just got to the point that I am like you know what I love it and I am sticking with the series. Now the only reason I gave this book a 4 star rather than the 5 star it' probably should of gotten was because of the out of world view change. Every now and then in the book we would change view point's to the character's lives outside of the game which isn't a bad idea but every time you really could sum up each real world view change to be some debate about the positives and negatives of vrmmo and comparing and contrasting them to real life which is fine for a few times of seeing this but it get's REALLY old really quickly. Now idk if this is just more of a personal view point on it but the characters where really just rehashing the conversation over and over each time they had a real world excursions
